192.168.2.1

Hi,

At least around 400 people every month search for a solution about this 192.168.2.1 This happens when you buy a new a Wireless Access Point, router or modem – and you want to connect to the Internet.

What I’m going to reveal and hope help these people is the following scenario when you just bought a new Wireless Access Point and want to set it up.

The scenario is as follows (yours can be slightly different):

You have:
1 PC
1 laptop
1 modem
1 wireless router
1 wireless access point

You just bought the wireless access point and you’re trying to install the software that comes with it – to setup the wireless access point. The manual tells you to go in your browser to 192.168.2.1 but when you do that it does not work (or it works but you cannot login).

What I recommend checking is the wires you’re connecting. The modem should be turned off. The wireless access point should have a wire attached to it and connected with the laptop (called LAN wire). The router should be turned on.

>> When you go to 192.168.2.1 and the page does not load or you never see the login form – then it’s because the laptop cannot access the wireless access point and probably that’s because there’s no LAN wire from wireless access point to the laptop. Maybe you connected the wire to the router or the modem instead.

Do not try 192.168.1.1 or stuff like that, because then you’ll access the router settings not the wireless access point. Each piece (modem/router/wireless access point) has it’s own name (the name is in a number format like 192.168.2.1). If the manual tells you to go to 192.168.2.1 don’t go to 192.168.1.1

I know that people do that mistake because on Yahoo Answers people are asking this question why can’t I connect to 192.168.2.1 and the answers are telling them to go to 192.168.1.1

So the problem is probably the wires are not connected where they should be, or the modem is on instead of off. The manual is not wrong when it says go to: 192.168.2.1

That’s the solution, now I’m going to explain some details for people who are new to this.

What’s a modem?

If you have a PC (a computer) and want to connect it to the Internet then you need a modem. A modem is a small box that will help you do that.

What is a wireless router?

If you a buy a second computer, this time a laptop (notebook) and you cannot connect it to the modem with wires – then you can use a wireless router. This box is like the modem but it allows the laptop to connect to the Internet without the use of wires. Means you don’t have to connect the laptop to this box or the other using wires.

What is a wireless access point?

If the laptop you bought is placed very far away from where the wireless router is located – then the connection to the Internet is poor (this means websites take long to load, etc). This is because the wireless router uses waves (like sound waves) and the further away your laptop is from the wireless router the weaker the waves; the weaker the connection to the Internet.

The wireless access point acts like a bridge. So you put it somewhere in between the wireless router and the laptop – then the waves (or signals) from the wireless router get picked up strongly by the wireless access point and this will send them to the laptop. This way signal is received strong to the laptop.

So that’s a basic understanding of these 3 boxes :)
