That might not solve your problem but it is a method you can use.

Your computer freezes during shutdown for several reasons. Most common reasons is because you have running programs. Before shutting down windows xp needs to close all open programs. If you do not close them then your computer will do it. More you have more it will take time.

Running programs may be invisible to you.

Suggestions:

1) Before shutting down make sure that all programs are closed. Press CTRL and WINDOWS and DELETE buttons on your keyboard. Press them multiple times all together for several times. A small window will open. Click on Processes tab. In that list see if you can find a program that you are familiar with. All programs in that list are running on your computer.

Maybe you see MSN messenger. If you do click once on the program name – then click on END PROCESS.

2) Check also near the clock, maybe there are firewall, antivirus software that are running. Close all of them before shutting down.

3) Create a system restore point in windows xp and do the following step afterwards:

Now click on start, then click run, then type in msconfig. Then click on the Services Tab Now remove the tick mark next to the services you don’t need. Make sure you know what you are doing here – do not just disable all of the services.

Most common services you can disable are:

Help And Support
Themes (windows xp theme will be set to classic)
Windows Time
Alerter
Application Layer Gateway Service
ClipBook
Computer Browser (If you are on a network with other computers, and need to see them, this may be a useful tool. Otherwise, disable it.)
Cryptographic Services
Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Error Reporting Service
Indexing Service
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service (leave it on if you have a CD burner installed)
Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
Messenger
Net Logon
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator
Remote Registry
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Telnet
Terminal Services
Uninterruptible Power Supply (If you are using a UPS on your computer and it has the capability of managing the system leave it ON)
Upload Manager (If you are not in a local network sharing data turn it off)
Wireless Zero Configuration
Workstation

It is easy to turn on the services again in case you receive some error message like this:

Upload manager service is turned off.

If you do not use a printer disable also:
Print spooler

NOTE:

You can alway use your system restore if any problems occur so feel free to disable the services I listed.

These are services that you want turned ON:

Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer Service
Event Log

There may be unwanted services running in the background. This way your computer should have little things to do while shutdown and speed will increase.
