Both of them are dangerous - but the way they effect your computer is different. The type of damage they do, how they do it and what is the purpose of adware/spyware is different.
Adware delivers advertisement on your computer. This can be done by popups - from software you download (that have adware) and they show you advertisements. From toolbars that display advertisements. When your Internet explorer browser changes - that is to show you advertisement from the website)
Your favorites menu may change - so you visit the adware creator website. In other ways adware are created by BAD advertisers who want to sell and advertise their products and services in a BAD way. The aim of adware creators is to make money selling their products and services - but using adware to advertise their services.
Spyware does other different things - it does not deliver any advertisements. Spyware takes control of your computer - the spyware owner takes control of your computer. Again not all spyware are similar. Some are created to capture and steal personal information about you - that is stored on your computer. The spyware can also see what you are typing in online forms - to capture email address or any other info you put in.
So spyware uses your computer to STEAL your information - so the SPYWARE CREATOR accesses info that he can find useful - such as credit card numbers (to steal cash), email, phone and physical address (to send spam and scams or to sell your personal info to other scammers). The spyware invade your computer and take control of it.
So THE DIFFERENCE is that ADWARE delivers advertisements on your computer (in several ways) and SPYWARE (takes control of your computer) to steal any sort of personal information.
So now you know what they both mean. All adware created have a name and same goes for spyware...

Unlike a virus software - which its aim is to detect viruses - there is only ONE software to detect BOTH adware and spyware. There is no such thing as adware software or spyware software. Only ONE - adware and spyware software.
