My Computer Takes 2-5 Minutes To Shut Down And Reboot

My Computer Takes 2-5 Minutes To Shut Down And Reboot

(Not referring to my super duper computer)

If you know your computer is as slow as a tortoise at shut down or reboot then you need to: (sit down, relax, take a deep breathe and do not fall asleep until you discover something below)

Open the task manager after closing all your programs. Therefore close your web browser, email client and anything you have.

To open task manager, right click on the task bar, somewhere near the start button. Then select Task Manager. (or hold the CTRL, Windows and Delete button at the same time, and press them at the same time multiple times)

Click on Processes after task manager loads.

Now, check each one of the items and see if there is something familiar to you. Maybe there is msn messenger or a game you recently installed. Could be also some software you recently downloaded.

Make sure you identify it and are sure that you know about it. If there is something then it is the problem you need to remove. You have to fix the program or programs - could be more than one. These are programs that are not being closed properly.

To fix, you can for example uninstall the program and re install it. Or ask their support to see why it is not being closed properly. I suggest the uninstalling it and see if your computer shuts off faster.

So that is how to find the problem/s that are causing your computer to switch off after a long time. (In reality your computer is trying to close those program that are still open but invisible to you)

Now, if your computer is taking long to reboot, you can check that you do not have unwanted programs running automatically when you turn on your computer.

Click Start, then Run
Type in msconfig
Click the Startup tab on top.

Now uncheck the programs that you do not need running on windows startup. For example, messenger, your antivirus software or firewall software. If you do not want them to load automatically (which is why your computer runs slow at startup) uncheck them. Uncheck only the programs you are sure of.

Still ALIVE and ENERGETIC after so much hard work I gave you :)? Your answer is Yes? Then you are the champ! Your answer is No! Too bad 4 U! Get rid of that crack you are smoking.

This way the computer does not have to load un needed programs on startup. It makes it startup faster.

If the problem is not fixed, please check for any infections - scan with your antivirus and anti adware/spyware software. Infections create all sort of damage.

Very cool. I love straight-forward first choice solutions. Sometimes the easiest fix is the besst one and many people just need a place to start.
