Get Rid Of Unwanted Icons On Computer
To delete any icon you can either press the DELETE button on your keyboard after clicking once on the icon. Then select YES when a pop up appears. You can also click once on the icon, right click and select delete.
Which icons are unwanted?
Shortcuts are all unwanted if you do not use them. Shortcuts allow you to access a program easier. For example instead of going to Windows Explorer, searching for Internet Explorer folder and double click on Internet Explorer to open IE - you can simple place a shortcut on your desktop. You just double click on the shortcut to open IE. Much easier.
However shortcuts take up space and so if you have too many shortcuts it does not help computer speed. There are other ways to access programs faster WITHOUT the need of shortcuts.

What Are Shortcut Icons?
Shortcut icons have sort of an arrow painted on the icon itself. To see how the arrow looks like Right Click on your Desktop. Select New and there in the list you will see Folder, Shortcut and maybe a long list. Next to Shortcut there you will see the small arrow. That is the arrow that is placed on the shortcuts.
How To Find Shortcut Icons And Delete Them?
This will allow you to find all shortcut icons on your computer and easily delete them all or the ones you want.
Click on Start, then Search. Click on Search For All Files And Folders Now click on More Advanced Options There you will see Type of file:
Click on Type of file: and you see there is a long list of items. Start by selecting the ones you are familiar with. For me it is Adobe Acrobat Documents. Select it.
Now in the Look in: box choose My Computer and finally hit search. This will give you all adobe reader documents you have on your computer, and you will also see all adobe reader shortcuts as well.
More easier to do than to explain believe me.
Once the search is finished you can delete all shortcuts and search for another file type. Look at the Type of file: list, choose one familiar to you and hit search. Repeat that.
Just search for the file types you are most familiar with. No need to search for all types of files. Most are useless, they have no shortcuts.
How To Delete Shortcuts After Your Search
Once search is complete you will see a list of files (if there are any). You have to find the icons that have the shortcut arrow - those are the shortcut icons.
(Right click on the results screen usually right hand side of the window, select View and Click Details - this will allow you to see the icons and also the word Shortcut next to each Shortcut icon)
To delete multiple files at once press the CTRL button, keep pressing it and click just one time on each of the shortcuts. Finally hit delete button.
Another Method To Find Shortcuts:
You can manually search for shortcuts. By manually I mean you visit Windows Explorer, search throughout the folders and look out for shortcut icons. That is not so easy.
The best method is the following:
Click on Start, then Click Search and Choose Files And Folders. Click on search for files and folders again.
Now in the Look in: box choose My Computer. Hit Search. This will take a long time - but if you do it manually you will never finish it - nor find all hidden shortcuts.
The list of files will be longer as well, however you can sort the results. (Right click on the window, select View and choose Details) Now click on the first column and that will sort out the list for you.
What you do next is find the shortcuts and delete them. Pretty long list probably. Take your time.
I am not sure how long it will take. It all depends on how many files you have on your computer. This method I just told you will list ALL OF THE FILES. Best method to find ALL OF THE SHORTCUTS. You do this only once, so I suggest leave your computer searching when you have some free time. It is worth the time.
With that said do not use that method if you are in a rush. It is a one time thing to do, deleting shortcuts will improve your computer speed. Keep in mind that you just have to click the mouse a couple times, and then it all works automatically. IT does TAKE time but you do not have to do anything at ALL :)
