Avast, the anti virus software I been using for a long time. Before I also tested BitDefender, AVG and many others...
However I found Avast very user friendly, easy, and works smooth. Does not give any trouble. They have an amazing support forum as well -- that is one of the things I really like. If you have some infections you can go there and ask for help, the experts will help you. At first I visited forum a couple times - I bored some people to death I assume :)
I have the free version of Avast, which in my opinion is enough protection. But they also have the upgraded version which I never tested so far. Upgraded version is not FREE - but in my opinion they just wanna make some cash. I think if they create a DONATE button they make more money. There software is great, but the upgraded version - I see nothing special about it.
One thing I noticed is that avast updates occur regularly, and it is the only free software I know that has real time protection. Not just scans but also protects while you are online. Most free software do not have that feature.
Plus it has all the powerful features that are important, such as:
Scans emails.
Scan any files easily by right clicking on them.
Automatic software and virus definition updates.
Automatic starts when you turn on computer.
Scanning deep into files, archives, cd/drive A files.
Real time protection.
Blocks viruses and alerts you of danger.
A build in tutorial and support forum online.
Help by email.
Ability to turn ON or OFF some options like automatic startup.
That is the tip of the iceberg probably. But I do not want you to fall asleep while reading some looong list of ...
But best of all the program does not give trouble. In other words it does not crash my computer, give errors or some other weird stuff. So far it only gave me one minor problem in a very long time. That minor problem was automatically fixed.
So avast is my recommended antivirus software. You might say: I do not give a sh**. Me too :)
Other software like NOD32 for example. Even after uninstall I still cannot completely remove it. Support did not reply to my requests. The software settings got corrupted after some time.
Bit Defender - no real time protection - software is almost dead, lying on the hardrive. Gave me trouble with scanning.
AVG - the program I still cannot figure out if it is free or not. This program in my opinion is still not 100% an antivirus. Meaning it is not yet fully perfect to be considered an antivirus. This also gave me problems with the scanning part.
