Fraud and identity theft are
more or less the same.
Identity theft - also known as ID
theft, identity fraud and ID fraud -
describes a type of fraud where a criminal adopts someone else's
identity in order to profit illegally. That number of victims and their
losses are probably much higher because several cases go unreported
every year. In most cases, identity theft allows the perpetrator to
benefit financially through gain of money, goods or services.
Identity theft can
happen to anyone and while most identity theft
happens online due to hacking, there are dozens of situations where
personal information was lost or stolen by a third party. Identity
theft is the fastest-growing crime and directly affected 9.9 million
people last year.

The best we can do to prevent identity theft online is to take
necessary precautions.
Keep your password secure. Be aware of all your personal ID numbers,
such as bank accounts, driver's license ....
The first thing you have to keep in mind to prevent identity theft is
the power your personal information gives the thief.
- Protect your Social Security number.
- Never give out your SSN, credit or debit card number
or other personal information over the phone, by mail, messanger
(during a chat) or on
sites online that are not secure. If not sure what secure websites are

- Don't carry any card in your wallet that contains the
Social Security number (SSN), unless you need to.
- Do not toss credit card receipts in public trash
container. Treat them as if they are important documents cause they are.
- Treat any personal information as carefully as
possible anywhere anytime.
